UNITED WAY AND LABOR

COMMUNITY SERVICES: AFL-CIO ON A LOCAL LEVEL

Guided by the goals and principles set at the National Level, the Dubuque Federation of Labor and the United Labor Participation Committee works locally with the United Way through the A.F.L.-C.I.O Community Service Program. The two organizations have been working together for more than 25 years. Health and human service needs are being met in our community. Along with efforts in the Fundraising Campaign, Labor has provided a strong hand in a variety of local activities to make our communities a better place in which to live, work, raise a family, and retire which include:

Training Programs: Offerings include training which assists union members by providing confidential information and referral services to other union members, family members, and the community.
Volunteer Recruitment: Without the help of volunteers, events such as the Salvation Army’s Labor Bell Ringing Day wouldn’t be a success. A.F.L.-C.I.O. Community Services recruit and coordinate volunteer efforts in this area.
Campaign Participation: The Labor Liaison, in conjunction with United Way Staff, works with organizations and businesses where a labor union is present, to ensure a successful United Way Campaign.

HUMAN SERVICES

Traditionally, United Way and Labor have worked together to actively promote Human Service needs in our communities. We do this through a variety of Community Service projects and events throughout the year which include:

The United Labor Participation Committee's Annual Christmas Dinner for the low income and elderly families in our community
Annual Letter Carriers' Food Drive to help collect food for the needy families
Assisting the Dubuque Area Labor Harvest in providing food to the low income and elderly families in our community
Participating in the Annual Labor Day parade each year
